Tinaa Datta supports ban on display of meat, for hygienic reasons

The South Delhi Municipal Corporation has reportedly passed a resolution that they will prohibit shops and restaurants from displaying meat in the open. This move has made for the sake of hygiene and has also been argued to be in favour of vegetarians, who are forced to see meat hanging. Telly actors give their two cents on the issue.

Sheeba - It's welcome since it's definitely not hygienic, not healthy to have meat sitting out in the open attracting dust, flies and bacteria.

Hrishikesh Pandey - I definitely feel that when it comes to hygiene, it is absolutely right, not just only in Delhi everywhere else as well. I have also seen that at many places, on the roadside or in the market, you see that mutton, beef and chicken are hanging from the top. They cut it and just keep it open and flies are all over the hanging meat. The meat hanging site doesn't look good to see and this move is definitely welcome. I think one should respect that.

Saurabh Pandey - I have travelled to many countries and I have never seen a single country displaying meat the way it is displayed in India. I think it's a good thing for not displaying meat. Especially it would be more clean and hygienic for non-veg eaters when the meat is kept in a closed place then in the open air. But no displaying the meat won't take away the suffering of what an animal goes through.

Samiksha Bhatnagar - No kind of meat should be illegal. People should be allowed to eat what they chose to eat and the government should not have the power to limit the diet options of people. While I understand that the practice of preparing meat can be cruel, the government should enforce best practice procedures, not outlaw the consumption of meat completely. There's a common misconception that a person needs meat to be healthy though. If the restaurant has taken all precautions of hygiene in terms of refrigeration and cleanliness as per the law of the land at the point of display, then on what basis can this proposed resolution be applied. I am all for instituting strict rules of hygiene in the restaurant industry as I feel it is sorely lacking, and many restaurants flout rules and regulations, detrimental to their customers, and create a public health hazard. They must be taken to task for any such transgressions. But it is very hard to see the connection between this resolution and an overall concern for hygiene. When it comes to hygiene and sanitation, as long as the hotels and markets maintain it, it should be fine. If there are flies and blood on the meat, it is disturbing indeed even for a non-vegetarian. I advise that proper hygiene be maintained for both meat shops and Subzi Mandis and to respect people's sentiments since not everyone eats non-vegetarian food.

Gavie Chahal - Choice of food is equal to choice of life. No one has right to decide on our choice of life. It is important to see that hygiene is maintained and in that way I support this decision. But only for the this cause alone. If someone doesn't want to eat non vegetarian food, they can always go to a pure vegetarian restaurant.

Sshrey Pareek - It's a right move. It's Important to take care of hygiene. Nobody is restricting anyone to not eat so there no reason to hurt sentiments of non-vegetarians. The government knows what they are doing and above all, we have chosen our government and we should trust them and if they go wrong we can oppose them. There's always a solution so let them try and see if it's a improvement for society or not.

Sanjay Gagnani - I am a non-vegetarian but I support this move of prohibiting the display of meat in open. I don't find the need or I don't find any logic behind displaying dead animals for non-vegetarians. Those who wish to buy meat will definitely buy it from the sellers irrespective of displaying meat or not. Since childhood, I was curious about the same, about why it's been kept on display? And yes, it's definitely very unhygienic to consume any food that's kept on display on the roads or in the open. Also, we should respect the sentiments of vegetarians. My family members who are vegetarians can't stand the smell of meat and can't see meat on display on the roads. So I support this generous move of prohibiting meat display in open for the sake of sentiments of vegetarians and hygiene.

Tinaa Datta - I think this is a very good move. Whether you are vegetarian or non-vegetarian, no one likes to see dead animals hanging in the open. Plus it is so unhygienic if the same is cooked. For the sake of hygiene, I support this. I feel that we should not get oversensitive to these decisions and think about them practically. No one is trying to snatch your right to eat what you want!
