After granting permission for 100 per cent occupancy in theatres and multiplexes, the Tamil Nadu government retracted the permit once the Madras High Court stayed the order on Friday. The decision was taken keeping the safety of people in mind.
Questioning the initial order, the Union Home Secretary had sent a letter to the state chief secretary requesting to adhere guidelines. The Madras high court stayed the decision asking the government to not permit more than 50 per cent occupancy till January 11.
According to the government, the decision was initially taken as the number of COVID-19 infections was coming down in the state, and also because the onset of Pongal festivities would be conducive for new releases in theatres. The motion was put into action to favour actor Vijay for his soon-to-release film, Master.
