Director Alphonse Puthren shared a note announcing he is quitting filmmaking
Acclaimed Malayalam director Alphonse Puthren, who has made movies like the Nivin Pauly starrer Premam and Neram, has announced that he is stepping away from his filmmaking career. Puthren made this decision after being diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
The Malayalam filmmaker took to his official Instagram page to announce his exit from films with a post. Puthren revealed that he was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder recently, and added that he didn't want to be a burden to anyone. However, he assured his fans and supporters that he will continue to create music, videos, and short films, with a primary focus on delivering content through OTT platforms.
His note read, "I am stopping my cinematic theatre career. I have autism spectrum disorder, which I found out yesterday on my own. I don't want to be a burden to anyone else. I will continue doing songs and videos, short films, and maximum on OTT. I don't want to quit cinema, but I have no other option. I don't want to make promises that I can't keep. When health is weak and unpredictable, life brings a twist like an interval punch."
After the post went viral on social media, he deleted it.

Puthren made his debut in feature films in 2013 with Neram, the full-length feature film version of his short film of the same name. The film is bilingual in Tamil and Malayalam and starred Nivin Pauly, Nazriya Nazim and Bobby Simha in lead roles. He directed the film Premam in 2015 which starred Nivin Pauly and Sai Pallavi, while also writing the screenplay, editing and acting in a cameo role in the film. The film went on to become a blockbuster at the box office, becoming one of the highest-grossing Malayalam films of all time.
