A still from Drishyam 2
Almost eight years after Drishyam caught everyone's attention with its howdunit narrative, Mohanlal is set to reprise his role as George Kutty, the prime suspect in the murder of the inspector general's son. Picking up from where the first part ended, Drishyam 2 raises the stakes as the murder investigation returns to haunt Kutty's family.
"George Kutty's only objective is to protect his family. For me, he is a mystery because he suppresses his real emotions. That said, it was easy to portray the character because of the script and the situations it provided," says the Malayalam superstar.
Though detractors pointed out that it was loosely inspired by Japanese novel The Devotion of Suspect X, the 2013 Jeethu Joseph-directed crime thriller was widely appreciated for its gripping plot and spawned a string of remakes. Ajay Devgn had headlined the 2015 Hindi adaptation with Tabu playing the cop. The thriller had also led to the official Chinese remake, Sheep Without A Shepherd (2019). "It has been remade in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi. Each of these versions has been solid because the storyline is so strong. Now, we hope to watch Drishyam 2 in Chinese and other languages," says Mohanlal. The director recounts being stunned when he was approached for the Chinese remake rights. "It was a proud moment for Malayalam cinema. I had never thought Drishyam would go to this level," says Joseph.
With the sequel slated to drop on Amazon Prime Video next week, Mohanlal doesn't dismiss the possibility of a third instalment. "It took us six to seven years for Drishyam 2, so we will hopefully bring the third part in another six years."
