Mammootty and Jyothika in a still from Kaathal-The Core
Prime Video today announced the streaming premiere of the critically acclaimed Malayalam drama 'Kaathal - The Core'. Directed by Jeo Baby, the film stars Mammootty and Jyothika in lead roles, with Anagha Akkuin in a pivotal role. 'Kaathal - The Core' is streaming on the service in India, starting today with dubs in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi. 'Kaathal - The Core is the latest addition to the Prime membership.
Breaking away from the usual family drama, 'Kaathal - The Core' reveals Mathew Devassy's journey, played by Mammootty, a retired bank manager, as he enters the world of local panchayat elections as an independent candidate - a bold move that takes everyone by surprise. The plot escalates when Mathew's wife portrayed by Jyothika makes a decision that stuns the community. The narrative dives into the complexities of their marriage, as well as themes of justice and personal fulfillment within the close-knit village community, making it a must-watch, compelling drama.
The film has been directed by Jeo Baby of The Great Indian Kitchen fame which is also being remade in Hindi. The film 'Kaathal-The Core' had faced bans in Qatar and Kuwait during its theatrical run because of its controversial plot. Talking about the film, Baby earlier said, "This is the first film I am directing someone else's script. I selected this project because it greatly intrigued me."
This is also the first time that Mammootty and Jyothika have shared screen. Their impactful and composed performance greatly contributes to the outcome of the film. In an interview before the release of the film, the Malayalam film superstar had said that Jyotika's simplicity is her trademark. Reacting to his comment, Jyotika said that her simplicity is coming from her husband Suriya. "Suriya is very simple. Even Suriya's family have always been grounded. I have now lived with them for 16 years in that house. It is all coming from there. I think we just become like that. It's nature."
