Veteran Bengali actress Anjana Bhowmick passed away at the age of 79. The actress was declared dead this morning around 10:30 am. She was taken to the hospital on February 16th due to respiratory problems. The actress was bedridden due to geriatric problems in the past few months.

A popular actor from the '60s-80s period, Anjana had earned audience acclaim in classics like 'Kakhono Megh' (Cloud after Sunshine), 'Thana Theke Aschhi' (Coming from Police Station), 'Nayika Sangbad' (Tale of a Heroine), 'Chowringhee,' 'Pratham Basanta' (First Spring), among others.

Born in Cooch Behar and later relocating to Kolkata during her graduation, Anjana entered the film world at the age of 20. She was noticed in the film 'Anustup Chhanda' in 1964 and came to be known as Anjana from her original name Arati. The next year, with 'Thana Theke Aschhi,' she was catapulted into the league of big names in the Bengali film industry.

Her chemistry with matinee idol Uttam Kumar in 'Thana Theke Aschhi,' 'Chowringhee,' 'Nayika Sangbad,' 'Kakhono Megh' was not unnoticed by the audience. She also acted opposite Soumitra Chatterjee in 'Mahasweta' and earned accolades.

She is survived by daughters Nilanjana Sengupta and Chandana Bhowmick. Anjana got married to a naval officer named Anil Sharma. Their elder daughter Nilanjana was an actress like her mother, but soon after her marriage, she quit acting and shifted her focus to her marriage. Nilanjana has been away from acting for years now; the then-actress is married to the popular actor Jisshu Sengupta.

In this poignant moment, the legacy of Anjana Bhowmick lives on through her cinematic contributions and the enduring impact she had on the hearts of her audience. Her contribution to Bengali cinema will be cherished forever. The actress's demise has sent a shock wave in the entire film industry.
