Assamese director-actor Bidyut Chakraborty dies

National award-winning Assamese director and actor Bidyut Chakraborty died here today following a prolonged illness, family sources said.


National award-winning Assamese director and actor Bidyut Chakraborty died here today following a prolonged illness, family sources said.

He was 56 and is survived by his mother and wife.

Chakraborty received the Indira Gandhi Award (Golden Lotus Award for Best Film) in 1996 for his film 'Raag Birag' which was also the opening film of Indian Panorama at IFFI that year.

He was the lead actor and associate director of another popular Assamese film 'Ahir Bhairav' which was shot entirely in the United Kingdom.

His films include 'Nisiddha Nadi', 'Gun Gun Gane Gane','Anuraaga', and 'Dwar' had won many prestigious awards.

His role in award winning film "Ramdhenu" received rave reviews.

Chakraborty also directed several award-winning videos and also stage plays.
