Priyanka Chopra Jonas took to social media to pen a tribute to DMX. The American rapper passed away after a cardiac arrest. He was 50. Known for his signature growls and hip hop hits, PeeCee wrote that he was one of her "favourite artistes growing up." She also remembered working with him and called it a "dream come true." In 2015, the two had teamed up for Meltdown. "It is a big loss to the music industry," she added.
The Grammy-nominated performer died after suffering "catastrophic cardiac arrest," according to the hospital in White Plains, New York, where he died. He was rushed there from his home on April 2.
The rapper, whose real name is Earl Simmons, had struggled with drug addiction since his teenage years. His lawyer, Murray Richman, had earlier said he could not confirm reports that DMX overdosed. In 2017, DMX checked himself in at a treatment centre in Southern California. "The decision was voluntary. He was encouraged to do so by manager Pat Gallo and ex-wife Tashera Simmons," said the sources.
The 46-year-old cancelled three shows earlier that week due to a medical emergency, according to his representative. He was supposed to perform in Santa Ana, Los Angeles and San Diego.
