Key Highlights

The MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) ceremony is taking place on Tuesday, September 12 in Newark, New Jersey. Rapper Saweetie is set to kick things off with a 90-minute pre-show starting at 2:30pm PST/6:30pm EST. The official ceremony is then scheduled to air live from the Prudential Center at 5pm PST/ 8pm EST, which is 5:30am Wednesday according to Indian Standard Time (IST).

Rapper Nicki Minaj will steer the proceedings at the event as emcee this year. She is also one of the performers. Singer Taylor Swift will be lauded as the nominations leader; she is sure to win a gong or two. The performance lineup ranges from Cardi B to MÃ¥neskin, giving everyone something to look forward to.

Where to watch the VMAs

The VMAs will be live-streamed on the MTV channel. It will also be simulcast on CMT, Comedy Central, Logo, BET, BET Her, MTV2, VH1, Nickelodeon, and Paramount Network. Those without cable television can still catch the full show on the MTV website. For US-based fans, the ceremony will also be available to stream live on Paramount+.

This year's show, airing live from the Prudential Center in Newark, is proceeding as planned despite the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike. Like the Tony Awards earlier this summer, the VMAs will focus on performances and unscripted banter from Minaj - who hosted last year's show - and presenters.

Who are performing?

Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion are set to perform their new single 'Bongos', along with Demi Lovato, Olivia Rodrigo, Doja Cat, Fall Out Boy, Karol G, Kelsea Ballerini, Måneskin, Reneé Rapp, Shakira, Sabrina Carpenter and Future. Anitta, A Boogie Wit da Hoodie, Diddy, Future, Kaliii, Lil Wayne, Metro Boomin, NAV, Swae Lee, The Warning, Peso Pluma, K-pop bands Tomorrow x Together and Stray Kids also feature on the lineup.

Winners?

Shakira will receive the MTV Video Vanguard Award and is set to perform on the show for the first time since 2006. Sean "Diddy" Combs will be presented with the Global Icon Award and mark his first performance on the VMAs since 2005.

Swift leads the nominations this year with 11 nods, followed by SZA (8); Blackpink, Doja Cat, Miley Cyrus, Minaj and Rodrigo (6 each); Kim Petras and Sam Smith (5 each); Beyoncé, Diddy, Drake, Ice Spice, Karol G, Metro Boomin, Shakira and Tomorrow X Together (4 each).
