Margot Robbie-led hit fails to bag BAFTA Best Film, Best Director nominations

It may have been among the highest-grossing films of 2023, but Margot Robbie-led Barbie failed to earn nominations in both Best Film and Best Director category.

Soon after the 2024 BAFTA nominations were announced yesterday, chatter around Greta Gerwig's cultural phenomenon being sidelined, grew loud.

"There's no such thing as expected at BAFTA," responded Anna Higgs, chair of BAFTA's film committee, while speaking to Variety following the announcement. "I think to play a guessing game with our expert members and where they can go, particularly in a year that's so competitive, is really hard."

While the film earned five nominations, including in the acting categories, it lost to Oppenheimer, which earned 13 nominations, and Killers of the Flower Moon, which will contend for nine titles.

Only one female director, Justine Triet (for Anatomy of a Fall), bagged a place in the direction category. Higgs, however, pointed to research that showed that, of the top 100 grossing films of 2023, only 12 were directed by women.
