In America, R-Rated means people under the age of 17 must be with an adult when they watch the film, reported E!Online.
"These days you kind of have to be R-Rated if you want to make it for our audience," he said.
Not much has been revealed about the film, other than Dwayne Johnson - The Rock - will be involved. They haven't even said when they'll begin filming.
The film is based on a classic TV series of the same name. The original beach lifeguard series starred David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson. It's unclear if any of them will appear in the big-screen version.
Efron, 27, was last seen in R-rated comedy "Neighbors" and is expected to return for the sequel. He will next star in "We Are Your Friends", "Dirty Grandpa", and "Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates".
