Mumbai welcomes 'Shape Of You' singer Ed Sheeran back with chants of 'We want Ed'. Did he deliver? Mumbai sure thought so
Well, safe to say, Ed Sheeran blew us all away. With his talent, his wit. And that sweet, sweet smile. Teenagers, fathers, mothers, unwilling boyfriends, everyone sang along as Sheeran belted out his top hits for an hour-and-a-half. It all started at 7 pm last night, at Bandra Kurla Complex where fans of the Brit singer spilled onto the streets outside JioGarden. The act started with American musician Lauv taking to the stage. Surprisingly, the kids around us knew the lyrics to each of his songs. They were also all struck by "how cute he was". Lauv played his hit, I Like Me Better, and the crowd chanted along.

But soon, cries of "We want Ed" filled the sky. And there he was, dot on time at 8 pm in a sea blue-green kurta and a huge grin in place. Like at his last gig in 2015, where he also wore a blue kurta, Sheeran was a one-man show, alternating between two guitars. However, the absence of a backing band implied poor sound production, with instances of the gig appearing like a karaoke show, spoiling the fun.

Sheeran left us little to complain about when he sang Happier, Dive and Perfect. Apart from regaling the audience with tracks from his fourth studio album, Divide, the singer was certain to belt out his previous hits, including Thinking Out Loud and Sing, ending the show with his chart-topper, You Need Me, I Don't Need You. We also loved his wit - urging the audience to sing in their out-of-key best. He also urged the "boyfriend who didn't want to come and the fathers who are looking after their daughters" to loosen up, and enjoy themselves.

Our only criticism was the lack of proper production. With screens available only close to the stage, fans at a distance could barely catch a glimpse of the singer. Yet, in the end, it was the perfect Sunday evening, and we just want to say, we love you Ed.
