The 70th annual Cannes Film Festival came to an end on Sunday, with Swedish satire, The Square winning the Palme d'Or.

Will Smith

Helmed by writer-director Ruben Östlund, the film is the follow-up to his 2014 international hit Force Majeure, which explored Swedish art, commerce, politics and national identity.

Eva Green

Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodovar, who headed the nine-member jury that included Hollywood stars Will Smith and Jessica Chastain, said the film was about "the dictatorship of being politically correct".

Jessica Chastain

Sofia Coppola won the best director gong for Beguiled, a remake of Clint Eastwood's 1971 film. Although members of the jury said she was the first woman to win the award, history books suggest that Soviet director Yuliya Solntseva had won it in 1961.

Diane Kruger and Fatih Akin

Joaquin Phoenix and Diane Kruger earned acting honours.

Monica Bellucci

Nicole Kidman, who starred alongside Colin Farrell in The Beguiled and The Killing Of A Sacred Deer missed out on the best actress trophy, but was awarded a special prize, collecting the jury's 70th Anniversary Award.

Uma Thurman

Smith flagged the lack of black characters during the 2017 edition, telling festival organisers during the final press conferences that 'a couple black folks [on screen] next year wouldn't hurt'.
