An adrenaline gusher, Edgar Wright's latest offering 'Baby Driver' has us on the edge-of-our-seats right from the opening credits itself. The story of a young man named Baby(Ansel Elgort), a professional getaway driver who needs music in order to navigate his everyday life, coerced into taking on jobs for the criminal underworld(Kevin Spacey, Jamie Foxx, Jon Hamm, Eiza Gonzalez), may not sound impressive but the manner in which it is treated, is. It's about one boy-man against the big bad world and he is willing to do duty so long as his life is not sullied. It's when they begin to interfere in his new found romance with Debbie(Lily James) that things turn turtle.
Once Baby is done paying up for a childish misdemeanour he is compelled to use his specific skillset to get out of the underworld. So will he or won't he? The director keeps us in thrall right through to the resolution of that eternal question.
If you've seen 'Drive' this may seem like a teen version of the same and that's no bad thing. The darkness and complements are all there but it comes at you in a playful, youthful zest that you are immediately enamoured. The storyline but of course, is not the one to impress here. Ansol Elgort's signature turn is both stylish and attitude heavy. His zany music in fact drowns out the persistent drum of the dark dangerous world he is forced to inhabit. The car getaway sequences may be on a much smaller, less digitally enhanced scale than the 'Fast and Furious' series but it's certainly far more gritty, believable and thrilling to boot.
The action and soundtrack are pretty much amazing. This fashionably savvy, post-millennial take by the uniquely gifted Edgar (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz)Wright makes this thrill-a-minute entertainer so with-it and well suited to the tastes of Gen Z.
