Assassination of Gianni Versace
Crime Anthology
Director: Ryan Murphy
Cast: Edgar RamÃrez, Ricky Martin
Rating:
Monikered A Random Killing, Season 2, Episode 3 American Crime Story: The Assassination Of Gianni Versace on Hotstar goes back a few years in time to profile the killer Andrew Cunanan's modus-operandi. The assassination of fashion icon Gianni Versace doesn't capture the imagination. And to compound the let-down, the culprit Andrew Cunanan, who was on the FBI's most wanted list, did not have the kind of notoriety that OJ Simpson (Season 1) did.
For Indian viewers though, the Versace murder was a mere forgotten headline. The first two episodes was an aria of desultory passion featuring fashion icons Versace (Edgar Ramirez), his sister Donatella (Penelope Cruz), his long-time lover/partner Antonio D'Amico (Ricky Martin) and the immediate circumstances leading up to his murder. The third episode focuses on the killer's past.

While it was great to see Ramirez, Cruz and Martin in the first two aired episodes, they are not much in the picture in the third one. This previewed third episode has a different story-telling style altogether; with less of operatic music, more drama and vicarious emotional byplay. Episode 3 is particularly intriguing largely because of Judith Light's magnetically stoic performance as Marilyn Miglin, wife of the murdered Lee Miglin. Even as a standalone, it's worth a watch, especially for her!
