The audience rose to their feet to applaud and cheer for Selena Gomez as she wept in the Palais after the screening, as reported by Variety and Deadline. According to the report, Gomez's co-stars in the film, Zoe Saldaña and Ãdgar RamÃrez, shared a hug in response to the standing ovation. Meanwhile, director Jacques Audiard acknowledged the applause by waving his hat from the balcony where he was seated.
In "Emilia Pérez," Gomez portrays the wife of feared drug cartel leader Manitas (played by Spanish actress Karla SofÃa Gascón). The story revolves around Manitas seeking the help of lawyer Rita (Saldaña) to undergo a sex change operation in secret as he plans to retire from the business.

A synopsis for the film on the Cannes official website, read, "Overqualified and undervalued, Rita is a lawyer at a large firm that is more interested in getting criminals off the hook than bringing them to justice. One day, she is given an unexpected way out, when cartel leader Manitas hires her to help him withdraw from his business and realize a plan he has been secretly preparing for years: to become the woman he has always dreamt of being."
The film is structured into four acts and includes original songs performed by the cast throughout, as reported by Variety.
