Sandhya Mridul was born in Mumbai but her parents shifted to Delhi when she was an infant. Her family moved to Jaipur when Sandhya was 10 and she completed her studies at Maharani Gayatri Devi Girls' Public School.

Sandhya Mridul's father, PR Mridul, who was a lawyer by profession passed away when Sandhya was only 14. She was then raised by her older brother Siddharth Mridul.

Sandhya Mridul's elder brother Siddharth is a sitting judge at the Delhi High Court. Sandhya has another elder brother named Pankaj.

Sandhya Mridul graduated in mathematics from Lady Sriram College, Delhi, and went on to work in a corporate firm in Mumbai. She received an opportunity to work in the TV series Swabhimaan during this time.

Sandhya Mridul started off her acting career in 1995. She has acted in popular television shows like Swabhimaan being her debut, followed by Banegi Apni Baat, Koshish and Ashirwad.

Sandhya then got an offer to portray Rani Mukerji's on-screen sister in the 2002 film Saathiya (pictured), which marked her Bollywood debut.

Sandhya Mridul won the adulation of critics and fans for her role in Page 3 (2005) (pictured) and went on to bag several awards.

Whether as the adventurous air hostess in Page 3 or the sensible elder sister in Saathiya, Sandhya lit up the screen with her fiery presence. But she was not much seen in out-and-out masala entertainers in Bollywood later. Talking about the same, she had told mid-day in an interview, 'I'm in Bollywood not to show my face, but to act. We don't make an Erin Brockovich in India, do we? When actor-oriented scripts are written, that's when you will get to see more of me.'

Sandhya Mridul has been praised for her versatility and her penchant for taking non-conformist roles. She famously said in an interview that she 'would like to step into the shoes that Smita Patil left behind'
