Actor Supriya Vinod played Indira Gandhi in director Madhur Bhandarkar’s political drama Indu Sarkar (2017) which was based on the events during the emergency period of India in 1975. Actor Neil Nitin Mukesh was seen as the late Sanjay Gandhi in the film. Later on, Supriya also played Indira Gandhi in the Telugu biopic NTR: Kathanayakudu (2019) and its sequel NTR: Mahanayakudu (2019) of the actor turned politician N.T. Ramarao who served as Chief Minister of the undivided state of Andhra Pradesh

Her uncanny resemblance to the former PM helped Avantika Akerkar bag a role in Nawazuddin Siddiqui-led 'Thackeray' which was released in 2019. She had a brief yet very important role in the film centered around the life of Shiv Sena supremo late Balasaheb Thackeray
