She had also participated in Marathi dance reality show Eka Peksha Ek, that gave her more fame. Two years later, Amruta started off her career as an actress with Marathi film Golmaal (2006). In the same year, Amruta appeared in Bollywood film Mumbai Salsa, which tanked at the Box Office.

Amruta Khanvilkar appeared in Bollywood films such as Hattrick, Phoonk, Phoonk 2, Phillum City and Himmatwala (item song).

She appeared in notable Marathi films such as Gair, Natarang, Arjun, Fakta Ladh Mhana, Satrangi Re, Shaala, Aayna Ka Bayna, Baji, Welcome Zindagi and Katyar Kaljat Ghusali.

After featuring in a mix of Marathi and Hindi movies, Amruta Khanvilkar finally got a big Bollywood break with Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal's Raazi, which opened up a lot of opportunities for her.

In Raazi, a spy thriller, Amruta Khanvilkar plays sister-in-law to the lead character essayed by Alia Bhatt. In the meanwhile, she also appeared in the web-series Damaged. After completing the shoot for Raazi, Amruta posted the following on Instagram regarding her experience which read, 'This film was more than just an experience it gave me an opportunity to be a part of something big, it taught me to be more n more hopeful, it taught me that when u think good things are not coming your way at that exact moment u r surprised by something big , it taught me never to give up (sic)'

"I think Raazi has opened a door for me to explore different mediums. As an actor, I want to work everywhere and language and medium should not be a barrier. We shot the web series actually 15 months ago but before the web show goes online, Raazi released and that has changed a lot of things," she told mid-day in a recent interview.

"I have been working in the industry for quite some time, but I think now all the right things are happening in the right manner. I have gained a certain amount of visibility among the national audience. I am glad," said Amruta.

While Raazi had a focus on Alia Bhatt's role, Amruta said, "Everyone's characters were well-written and so all the supporting cast members got equal visibility and importance".

After Raazi, Amruta Khanvilkar was seen in John Abraham-starrer Satyamev Jayate and Marathi film Ani Dr. Kashinath Ghanekar.

Asked if she is more interested in Bollywood films rather than regional cinema, Amruta said, 'I do not want to limit myself. If tomorrow I am offered an international film, I will do that. I see no reason to say no to any good role.'

She was last seen in Disha Patani, Aditya Roy Kapur, Anil Kapoor and Kunal Kemmu-starrer Malang. Amruta played Kunal's wife in the film. She had revealed how Kunal helped her perform certain stunts. "I had never done action and the entire climax scene required me to fall here and there. I got really scared in the beginning because I didn't want to injure myself. This is when Kunal came to rescue. He taught me how to do it. He's not only a brilliant performer but is also very cooperative. He doesn't shy away from sharing his inputs to make the scene better," she said of her highlight scene in the film where she gets brutally bashed up by Kunal's character.

Amruta is a huge fan of Ranveer Singh. She had a gala time at the Magnetic Maharashtra Convergence 2018 with Ranveer Singh. The two actors decided to do some 'Khalibali' for Instagram fans and it became the talk of the town, where both the actors were all praises for each other.

On the personal front, Amruta Khanvilkar wed actor Himanshu Malhotra in 2015. The couple was in a relationship prior to that for ten years.

Unlike other celebrities, Amruta Khanvilkar does not like to indulge in PDA with husband Himanshu on social media. She said that she has known Himanshu since 2004 and does not feel she needs to indulge in PDA on social media for the sake of it.

Amruta Khanvilkar and Himanshu Malhotra had even participated as a jodi on dance reality show Nach Baliye 7. The couple had emerged winner of the season.
