The funeral of National Award-winning music director Mohammed Zahur Hashmi, known as Khayyam was performed at Four Bungalow Kabrastan on Tuesday - August 20 - evening with full state honours. Khayyam's mortal remains were kept at his Juhu home to enable people to pay their last respects to the legendary composer who passed away aged 92 late on Monday.

Khayyamji was admitted to Sujay Hospital in suburban Juhu a few days ago owing to breathing issues and other age-related illnesses. He died at around 9.30 pm on August 19.

The funeral procession of Khayyam Sahab started from his home in Dakshina Park Society, Juhu, at around 4 p.m., and wend its way to the Four Bungalows Kabrastan. The last rites were performed at 4.30 p.m. and he was accorded full state honours, including a gun salute.
While recalling the late composer's legacy, filmmaker Ashoke Pandit told PTI, "An era of music has ended in our country. Khayyam's sir's work is immortal and no one will erase him from their memories."
He detailed the time he along with other visited Khayyam in the hospital and said, "We noticed the freshness on his face and it felt as he would right away hum some new composition. It's hard to believe that he is no more."
Khayyamji, began his career in music from the city of Ludhiana at the tender age of 17. He got his first big break in blockbuster 'Umrao Jaan' through which he made his permanent place in Bollywood industry.
Khayyamji was honoured with Padma Bhushan in the year 2011 and was bestowed the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2007.
Khayyamji is known for his classics Kabhie Kabhie from the movie by the same name, In Ankhon ki Masti from Umrao Jaan, Aap ki mehki hui zulfon from Trishul, Ae dil-e-nadan from Razia Sultan among many many others.
Talat Aziz, Sonu Nigam, producer Ramesh Taurani, Ashoke Pandit were among the celebrities who attended the last rites of Khayyam Sahab.
