Aamir Khan grew up in a family that has been part of the Hindi film industry for decades. Late producer-director Nasir Hussain is Aamir Khan's paternal uncle, cousin Tariq Hussain Khan has acted in 'Yaadoon Ki Baaraat' which was a hit film in the 1970s. Actor Imran Khan is Aamir Khan's nephew and his second wife Kiran Rao is a film producer.

Before making his debut with Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak in 1988, Aamir Khan honed his acting skills as a child artiste. After the success of Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, Aamir Khan featured in several hit blockbusters like Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin, Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke, Rangeela, Raja Hindustani, Sarfarosh, Lagaan, Dil Chahta Hai, Talaash: The Answer Lies Within and Dangal.

Aamir Khan was honoured with the Padma Shri in 2003 and the Padma Bhushan in 2010 by the Government of India.

In 1986, Aamir Khan married Reena Dutta. They have two children, a son named Junaid and a daughter, Ira. After almost 16 years of marriage, Aamir Khan and Reena Dutta filed for divorce in 2002.

Aamir Khan met Kiran Rao on the sets of Lagaan. Kiran Rao was one of the assistant director to Ashutosh Gowariker in the film. The couple became close friends and tied the knot in 2005. Kiran Rao and Aamir Khan have been married over 13 years now and they have a son Azad Rao Khan, who was born in 2011 through a surrogate mother.
