The Tamil actor talks about why South filmmakers fancy 'fair' actresses from the North

South actor Chiyaan Vikram has been part of several blockbusters in Tamil cinema. Having made his foray in Bollywood three years ago, with Mani Ratnam's Raavan, he recently made a comeback with Bejoy Nambiar's David.

Having worked in the South film industry for many years, Vikram has acted in several films featuring actresses from the North. And according to him, it is because South filmmakers are "very obsessed" with the fair skin.

Talking about particularly fair-skinned actresses including Genelia D'souza, Ileana D'Cruz, Kajal Aggarwal or Tamannah Bhatia who are quite popular down South, Vikram says, "Filmmakers from the South industry want fair actresses in their films as they are obsessed with the pale skin colour."

Vikram feels that in Tamil Nadu, the profession of acting is not really encouraged among young girls. He says, "Unlike in Mumbai or Delhi, where pretty girls often choose to act in films, in Tamil Nadu beautiful women prefer to either pursue academics or just get married." So much so that Vikram says his own daughter will never act in films.

Talking on the subject of idiosyncrasies harboured by South cinema folks, Vikram also feels that the reason why South actors don't do stage shows or telly shows is because they "look down upon them".

The actor adds, "Even if you give R 5 crore to me or even Vijay, we will not perform at shows. Why should we dance? And if we do TV shows, the audience will think our film careers are over."u00a0
