Sit With Hitlist: Sushmita Sen reveals how she went to court both times to adopt her daughters Renee and Alisah

Sushmita Sen

Sushmita Sen shocked the world as she adopted her first child, Renee, as a single mother in the year 2000, when she was just 25. Ten years later, the actress and Miss Universe winner adopted a second girl child, Alisah.

Why did it take Sushmita 10 years to adopt her second child? Because the law says, when you already have one girl child, you cannot adopt another. She actually went to court for both her girls.

"It took me 10 years to have my Alisah. It took us 10 years to win that. We won on the 17th of November, and on 19th, which is my birthday, my daughter came home," Sushmita told Mayank Shekhar during the latest Sit With Hitlist conversation.

She had no intentions of becoming an actor after winning the pageant. It was only on Mahesh Bhatt's insistence that she took up the role in her debut film, Dastak. Sushmita recalled Bhatt telling her, "Maine kab kaha tum achhi actress ho? I'm telling you I'm a damn good director!"

It was at a night club that someone scouted Sushmita and said, ‘You should join Miss India.' "What! Me? Miss India? No!" was her reaction.

Sushmita also confirmed a piece of gossip for us, about her boyfriend Rajat Tara, who she is said to have unceremoniously dumped after becoming Miss Universe. She happened to be the best man at Rajat's wedding, many years later!

The actress also recalled her first meeting with the legendary Amitabh Bachchan. For more such anecdotes, watch out for the full interview, out on November 18.
