Mani Ratnam's ambitious drama, Ponniyin Selvan, is readying for a September 30 release. In a novel turn of events, the filmmaker has decided against having a grand teaser launch in Mumbai or Chennai. Instead, the first promo of the period drama - that traces the early days of Arulmozhi Varman, who became the great Chola emperor Rajaraja I - will be launched at an ancient temple that was built by the king in Tanjore, Tamil Nadu. The principal cast, including Jayam Ravi, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Vikram and Karthi, will be present on the occasion.
A source reveals, "The Brihadeeshwara Temple in Tanjore was built by Rajaraja I in the 11th century. Since the film is an ode to the Chola emperor, it is fitting that the makers start the journey from one of his magnificent creations. The two-minute teaser will give a glimpse of Arulmozhi Varman's growth as a ruler." Karthi plays chancellor Periya Pazhuvettaraiyar while Rai plays a double role - as his wife Nandini, and her mother Mandakini Devi in the movie.
The film's executive producer, Siva Ananth confirmed the news, stating, "We are planning to release the teaser at a temple in south India in July. We have yet to finalise the date. The trailer launch will be sometime in September."
