Reports claim that Mahira and Salim met for the first time at an event hosted by the television application, Tapmad TV. The actress has kept her personal life guarded and rarely spoke about her relationship with him.
In April 2019, Mahira and Salim got engaged in an intimate ceremony. Sharing pictures on Instagram, she wrote, "Here is to love, madness, sweet suites, tears of joy, laughter, winging speeches, jeevay jeevay.. here is to life."
Mahira confirmed her relationship with Salim in 2020 during an Instagram live with Pakistani designer HSY. When the designer asked, "You are in love now, his name is Salim. When you look deep into his eyes, what is the first thing that comes to your mind?" The actress said she wasn't comfortable talking about her personal life. Instead, she recited a dialogue from her famous show, Humsafar, to explain her feelings. "There's a line in Humsafar, which I thought was beautiful, where Ashar says to Khirad, 'Pata nahi tum mujhe kis naiki kay badlay main miley ho (I don't know what I did right to deserve you.) I think the same about him," she shared.
She added, "I don't know what have I done in my life, [but I] must have done something good because of which Allah blessed me with."
During an interview on FWhy Podcast, Mahira recalled the experience she had in her first marriage with Ali Askari. They married in 2007 and got divorced in 2015. The couple's son Azlaan was born in 2009. She said in the interview, "Post Azu, I knew my marriage wasâ¦even prior, I think. But I think you let it go on and you love the person, who is your childhood sweetheart. But I think that was a very painful and difficult time. I was so young at the time. I had a baby, I was scared."
Reflecting on her divorce, Mahira stated, "When you are going through it, it is very painful. You are sitting in a room, and you feel the walls are closing in on you. You feel anxious and you don't know what it is. I think that is more painful than when you make a decision."
During the initial years of separation, the actress revealed the complexity of their parting, saying, "The first few years were very painful because it was about two good people, it was not an abusive relationship. But it was like two kids had gotten married and sometimes two people evolve differently. There was a little bit of pressure to go back as well."
