Kiran Rao
After receiving harsh comments from Sandeep Reddy Vanga earlier this year, director Kiran Rao can take comfort in knowing that her 'low-budget', rural dramedy Laapataa Ladies has garnered more views on Netflix than Vanga's big-budget, heavily promoted, and highly controversial action film Animal.
Kiran Rao's Laapataa Ladies outperforms Sandeep Reddy Vanga's Animal on Netflix
Ranbir Kapoor's film, Animal, hit theatres in December and quickly set new box office records, raking in over Rs 900 crore worldwide. Meanwhile, Laapataa Ladies premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year and was later released in theatres in March, but it only earned a little over Rs 20 crore globally. However, the streaming performance of the two films tells a different tale.
According to the Indian Express, Laapataa Ladies premiered on Netflix a month ago and has since amassed 13.8 million views. On the other hand, Animal premiered on Netflix in January and garnered at least 13.6 million views in the first three weeks before dropping out of the top 10 in the fourth week. Laapataa Ladies not only stayed in the top 10 for a week longer than 'Animal', but it hasn't fallen below the top 5.
