Karan Johar (L), Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh in RARKPK film still
Karan Johar's latest directorial 'Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani,' starring Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh, has received great responses from audiences. Karan Johar maintained a relatively low profile during the film's extensive and high-budget promotions across different cities in India. However, he is now openly expressing his pride regarding his recent project, and sharing snippets and anecdotes of what happens on the film sets.
In an interview with Bollywood Hungama, Johar addressed questions about the character Rani, played by Alia Bhatt. Despite Rani's portrayal as a contemporary woman, she is seen wearing sarees throughout the film. Responding to the question of why this is so, Johar asserted that modernity is not dependent on one's choice of clothing. He also challenged preconceived notions surrounding the association of modernity with Western clothes.
Johar expressed his admiration for sarees, referring to them as the "biggest gift" derived from our (Indian) culture. He posed the question, "Why do we associate modernity with a western garment?" He further explained his viewpoint, stating, "I have met so many women who wear sarees so beautifully and they are so beautifully progressive and very much with the times, intelligent, well-read, well-traveled, well spoken, they wear sarees. It's just that we associate modernity and progression with western garments."
Johar gave some background to the character Rani, revealing that while she had completed her education in the US, her upbringing around her mother and grandmother left profound influences on her, therefore leading her to often wear sarees.
