Salman, 49, came under fire from political parties in Tamil Nadu for allegedly campaigning in support of former Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakasa during elections last month.
"The intention was very clear from our side. We were there to promote and conduct eye camps on behalf of Being Human.
Salman has been doing eye camps in Sri Lanka and we always wanted to go there. But we had less time so the event was not as successful as we thought it would be. Politics was not in the picture at all," Jacqueline told PTI.
The 'Roy' actress feels the whole issue was blown out of proportion as the eye campaign happened during the election period.
"I can understand the sentiments of people but I have never spoken about my political views whether it is in India or Sri Lanka. For me it was a joyous time. I was there in my own country and Salman was with me for a charity event. It was a brilliant opportunity. We were there to spread awareness.
What made me more sad was that no one asked us anything before writing such stories," she said.
The 29-year-old actress, who made her debut in Bollywood in 2009 with Amitabh Bachchan-starrer 'Aladin', said people should not be judgemental.
"I can't talk on behalf of Salman but if you ask me I believe when you talk about democracy we should respect each other and our opinions too. You cannot judge someone on the basis of who they want to support," Jacqueline said.
The actress is all geared up for her next romantic-thriller 'Roy', where she is playing a double role.
Also starring Ranbir Kapoor and Arjun Rampal, the film will hit theatres on February 13.
