Chhorii director Vishal Furia on how the horror genre is undermined in Bollywood

Chhorii

Vishal Furia recently served up the horror outing, Chhorii, an official adaptation of his much-loved Marathi film Lapachhapi (2017). Lauding Nushrratt Bharuccha for taking on the Amazon Prime Video offering, the director notes that many actors in Bollywood shy away from the experimental genre of horror.

"Horror as a genre is highly undermined in our country. A-list stars often shy away from being cast in these films because of the career risks that come with it. A lot of this has to do with the fact that horror films have not been presented well. Things have changed today though," says Furia. He adds that technology has improved by leaps and bounds, allowing filmmakers to explore finer methods of storytelling. "Be it romance or action, [filmmakers have] churned out brilliant content. I don't see why horror should be left behind."

After Chhorii, the director has explored the genre again with his latest project Bali. Believing that scare fests can go well beyond chills and thrills to tell meaningful stories, he adds, "I want to up the ante and change the way the audience perceives horror films. There is great scope to tell impactful stories in the genre. Someone needs to make a start, and I have begun my journey in that direction."
