Kiran Rao, Aamir Khan and Ravi Kishan
Filmmaker Kiran Rao is eagerly looking forward to the release of her film 'Laapataa Ladies'. She returns to direction after 13 years with the comedy-drama that features several new faces. Co-produced by ex-husband Aamir Khan, the film stars Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastava, Chhaya Kadam, and Ravi Kishan in the lead roles. Recently, Kiran revealed that Aamir Khan had also auditioned for the role that has been played by Ravi Kishan in the film. After watching Kishan's audition tape, Aamir and Kiran said he would do justice to the role of Manohar.
During an interview with The Week, Kiran Rao was asked if Aamir Khan had a special appearance in 'Laapataa Ladies'. She said that Aamir Khan would have liked to do it and revealed, "In fact, Aamir and I had a huge discussion on whether he should play Manohar's character, which was played by Ravi Kishan. Aamir said, âI really love the character, I really want to play it.'"
Aamir Khan auditioned for the role and was "really good", revaled Kiran. But when Kiran showed Kishan's audition to Aamir he was convinced that he would not be able to match with Kishan's portrayal of the character.
Rao said, "I feel he (Kishan) brings a complete surprise to this character because you don't know what to expect from him. When Aamir is in a role, he sort of sets expectations for his character. Aamir was very in on that decision that Ravi can do this better and perhaps, âI wouldn't do full justice to it.'"

Filmmaker Kiran Rao also spoke about choosing new faces for her film. She shared, "It was kind of deliberate. I was really lucky because Aamir was fully supportive of the idea, he also felt strongly that the story needed to be rooted and authentic, with faces that were fresh enough to be very believable in this rural setting and also not to raise expectation of any kind."
Presented by Jio Studios, 'Laapataa Ladies' is directed by Kiran Rao and produced by Aamir Khan and Jyoti Deshpande. The film is releasing on March 1, 2024, and has been made under the banner of Aamir Khan Productions and Kindling Productions, with the script based on an award-winning story by Biplab Goswami. The screenplay and dialogue are written by Sneha Desai, while the additional dialogues have been jotted down by Divyanidhi Sharma.
