Before popcorn became movie-goer's staple companion, single-screen theatre's A1 Samosas were the go-to meal for audiences. As single-screen owners worked towards cost-cutting, the popular brand found itself losing its deal with theatre owners, suffering a 60 per cent loss to business. "We had a tie-up with cinema houses, and now, no longer do. March 16 was the last time we supplied samosas. Our link with the cinema halls has been cut off," says Mahesh Wadhwa, co-owner of the company, adding that cinema chains were among the biggest business drivers.
"But, we have been around since 1964, so we have other links, like retail counters, hotels, and shops."
Due to lack of business, 40 staffers had to look out for other options, while the company continues to work with a team of 30. "Staffers left because there was no work. When things began to resume, we didn't have enough business to accommodate anyone."
