When it comes to impulsive shopping, particularly for hair and skincare product hoarders, it's a tough call to skip certain 'must-haves'. To add to the misery of this reviewer's swipe records, luxury hair care company, Kérastase has launched Chronologiste fragrant oil.

Now, we had been dreaming of adding fragrance to our hair ever since we saw Aishwarya Rai's character's hair being treated with fragrant smoke in Jodhaa Akbar.

But a quick look at the cost of this product (Rs 5,000 for 120 ml) left us with a sinking feeling. The fragrant oil is the final step as part of Kérastase's Chronologiste hair ritual (shampoo, scrub and balm that contains caviar) but can be used on its own too. With hair perfumes by other popular brands yet to launch in India, this product has an added advantage.

The review
The product does justice to its tag. It is alcohol, paraben and silicon free, and being an oil, it is supposed to nourish hair and not just perfume it. We were a tad wary at first, with it being termed as an oil; as our hair tends to get heavy very quickly due to the city's high humidity levels. So, when we first pumped a bit of the product, we were surprised to find its texture not watery, and yet lighter than most serums. Relieved, we applied the oil to our hair, like one would apply any serum and were ready to go. For a few inches short of waist-length hair, we needed about three pumps of the product.

The aroma of the product has been created by master perfumer Alberto Morillas (creator of popular fragrances for brands ranging from Givenchy, Issey Miyake to Kenzo). Morillas has used a mix of tea rose, woody scents, musk and an oleo-extract of myrrh. The result, a breathtaking fragrance that lingered in the room (and on our palms) once we applied it. Like a good perfume, the fragrance has base, middle and top notes. It's also a unisex perfume so makes the ideal grooming gift for your partner.

We could smell the fragrance each time we flipped our hair, and still didn't find it overpowering. It lasts for about three hours, and by the end of the day, our hair didn't feel greasy. Two factors that might be a hindrance include the glass bottle, which will make it difficult to carry it around during your commute, and secondly, that you cannot apply it on wet hair. So one will have to skip it in a rush to office post a hair wash.
