Janhvi Kapoor, Raveena Tandon, Shabana Azmi and Alanna Panday
Sometimes a single word sums up everything you need to know about the current red carpet trend. Sleeves is such a word: maximum fabric, maximum romanticism and maximum all-round punch. At a beauty awards gala hosted by a leading fashion magazine on Tuesday night, these four Bollywood ladies seemed to have walked straight out of Jane Austen novels.
Classic gets a contemporary twist
Play dress-up like Janhvi Kapoor. A crinoline petticoat and ringlets pulled into a bun might have been replaced by sleek modern tailoring and glossy, side-swept curls, still the billowing ornate cape joined at the hem evokes an almost Sense & Sensibility romance.

Past perfect
The sartorial lessons of 1890's aristocracy - balloon sleeves, low-shoulder line and a high-waistline - continue to inspire evening wear dresses. Nicely done, Raveena Tandon.
Drama in the details
Trust Shabana Azmi to embrace the intrepid legacy of ruffles as seen on the voluminously swirled edging of the wide-shoulder blouse. Historically, ruffles were considered unisex, an agreeable balance between womanly and feisty.
Goth, with a hint of glam
Move over sassy sequins, shiny gothic puff sleeves combined with power shoulders of the '90s is the new heroine of the red carpet. For inspiration, look to Alanna Panday's modern take on bodice and hemline evolved into an asymmetric A-line.
