Vivek reborn

Actor Vivek Oberoi is a humbled man. The rave reviews he's received from critics, press, peers and fans for his work as Riyaaz in the newly-released Kurbaan make him feel overwhelmed. Vivek takes some time off for a chat with CS:

Riding high
Saif and Kareena have been so supportive through the making of the film. I've been inundated with encouraging messages from them since even before the release of Kurbaan; it is really sweet of them. Director Rensil D'silva too called to say that 'I'm so happy to see what you've brought to the film. I couldn't see anybody else as Riyaaz Masood.' But the biggest compliment came from Karan Johar. He gave me a hug and said 'I asked you to make me proud, and you have!' I couldn't have asked for better friends and colleagues.

Filmy take
I was four when I decided that I wanted to be an actor. Bollywood influenced me as a fan and as an aspiring actor, which went on till I became 24 years old and RGV roped me in for Company. I'm a big SRK fan; his films have been Bollywood's milestones I've seen DDLJ 17 times in the theatre; my then girlfriend came with me for four-five screenings, but couldn't keep up with my interest. But, the film industry has had a far deeper impact on me since the time I became an actor.

Changing times
Evolution is a constant process and definitely something to strive for. The last seven years of my life have been a roller coaster ride, an emotional journey. I've seen so many rise and falls, some ugly and proud moments. All my upheavals have been subjected to constant scrutiny. And for someone like me, I find it most difficult to see that the sincerity of my emotions comes under scanner. There was a time when there were more digs at me than on the roads of Mumbai! I know what started it, but it all snowballed out of proportion. It felt unfair at the time, but truth has its own destiny and it's a welcome change, especially for my family, to have people say well about me.

Mentor magic
My dad's been my idol all throughout. He's lent me support and given me the strength to keep my head up. I admire the dignified manner in which he's carried himself through all my trials and tribulations. But there's one man I have to mention Ram Gopal Verma; I'm eternally grateful to him for giving me Company. So if dad is my inspiration to become a better human being, RGV inspires me to be a better actor.
