Kiran Rao is gripped by one of the busiest and most exciting phases of her life. Her debut film as a director is poised for release this month and her nephew by marriage, Imran Khan, will be tying the knot this weekend. Kiran talks to CS about all things that have put her in a tizzy recently:
Too many balls are in the air. It's nerve-racking and exciting at the same time. After all, there can only be one first film. And it's quite terrifying to think how it will be received. Aamir's support to my film has raised high expectations and I hope that the viewers go home happy.
Thankfully, my attention is getting diverted with all the wedding activities at home. Aamir and I are presently living with my mother-in-law and my two sisters-in-law have also come down. It's turning out to be a great family time; we are having immense fun and I work only when I'm forced to!
City connect
I came to Mumbai from Kolkata in 1998 and worked in advertising for a year and a half. In 2005, I assisted Ashu (Ashutosh Gowarikar) for Lagaan and since then it has been quite an experience in the world of Hindi cinema. I've made some good friends and formed great working relationships.
In my years in the industry, I've learnt to be fairly honest as there are enough people who will only be tactful and never reveal their true feelings. Also, I've learnt that you should never judge a book by its cover. And yes, although it's tough, I've learnt how to deal with different kinds of people.
Mumbai is really an inspiring city and the day I landed here, I felt an instant connection. Though I'd love to change a lot in the city, I've come to love it, with all its layers.
In fact, it is the people that make this city what it is. With waves of people finding their livelihoods here daily, in my eyes, Mumbai has always an ever-changing, chameleon-like quality.
Aamir is the man
Aamir is a director's actor. In fact, he's a dream actor. He is extremely committed and focussed and was a huge help on the sets. Though we disagreed a lot, his take was always important. I'm very happily married, even after five years, so that should say it all.
He's my life partner and we are very good friends and value our friendship greatly. Today I feel we are more in love with each other as we've grown together through the years.
