In an industry relying on borrowed scripts and predictable outlines, sometimes we look for treatment to make all the difference.

What it's about: In an industry relying on borrowed scripts and predictable outlines, sometimes we look for treatment to make all the difference.

And when it's not at the cost of the narrative, the effect could be interesting. Vishal Pandya's film, Three: Love Lies Betrayal, may not be a completely original concept but the director's vision makes it somewhat above the ordinary.

It's a story about a married couple living in Scotland Anjini Dutt (Nausheen Sardar) and Rajeev (Akshay Kapoor), who are going through a rough patch because of their financial problems.u00a0 She's running the house by giving kids violin lessons but it's not enough.

He wants her to sell her ancestral home, to fund his next project. She refuses, which make matters worse. Finally, she suggests a paying guest. Enter Sanjay (Ashish Chowdhry) who makes matters worse. Anjini falls for him but is he really the man he seems?u00a0

What's good: It's been a long time since we've seen a thriller. So when someone makes one revolving around sex, lies and deceit, it is definitely worth a cheer. This one also has a surprise ending and there are enough plot twists to keep your interest going all through the two-hour run time. The film starts well and the problem between the couple is evident quickly.

The director does a nice job of establishing the characters. Rajeev is someone worth hating as he's angry, bitter and even smacks his wife around, while Sanjay is sympathetic to the troubles of his landlady, and it's only a matter of time before they are drawn towards each other.

The setting of the film is sharply realistic. The old mansion sort of home adds to the sense of dread and foreboding.u00a0u00a0

What's bad: In the second half, the back and forth between the past, present and future gets confusing. To keep the proceedings really tight, the film should've been shorter than its two hours.

At many points, you find the pace dipping, making you reach for your phone to see the missed calls. As a rule, when that happens (especially in a thriller), something is wrong with the narrative.

The writing and the visual construction are wonderful but the performances are not consistent on the level of sureness and finesse.

What to do: It doesn't have the big names, but if you're in the mood for a neat thriller, go for it.
