For the past two years, the grapevine has been abuzz about Munna Bhai 3 being in the works. Tentatively titled Munna Bhai Chale Dilli, the project was supposed to go on floors as soon as Sanjay Dutt was released from jail in 2016, with Jolly LLB director Subhash Kapoor taking on the directorial baton from Rajkumar Hirani. However, things didn't work out with producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra, leading to Kapoor's exit from the project.
Far from being upset about it, Kapoor says he is "looking forward" to part 3 of the hit franchise. "I had submitted a draft to Vidhuji, but we weren't on the same page and so, we decided not to go ahead [with the collaboration]. It was an amicable decision. I am looking forward to Raju Hirani and Abhijat Joshi [writer] to make the film as soon as possible," he says.
Earlier this month, Hirani announced he would direct Munna Bhai 3 after wrapping up the Dutt biopic starring Ranbir Kapoor. "It is one of my all-time favourite franchises and I am excited," says Kapoor.
The other thing that he is excited about is his latest release, Jolly LLB 2, which has minted over R100 crore at the box office. An ecstatic Kapoor says, "It feels great when people like your work. My attempt has always been to connect my work to real life issues."
Jolly will soon get a third part, although it is only in the planning stage now, the director says, adding, "I have a few stories in mind, but I still have to write the script."
