Still from Soorma
The cinematic presentation of former Indian hockey player Sandeep Singh's journey has earned Rs 13.85 crore over its opening weekend. The figure is appreciable, given that Diljit Dosanjh starrer Soorma hit a mere 1,100 screens across the country.
Over the weekend, the film's earning shot up by about 50 per cent when compared to its opening day collection of Rs 3.20 crore. It has, however, been unable to outshine Paul Rudd-starrer Hollywood release, Antman And The Wasp, which garnered Rs 19.3 crore over three days of hitting screens.
Still from Antman And The Wasp
According to trade expert Amod Mehra, both the films are performing well at the box-office. "Despite a slow start, Soorma picked up pace, thanks to the positive reviews. When [earnings from] digital and satellite rights are considered, the makers are likely to make profits. At the same time, Hollywood superhero flicks have been popular in India, and the collections of Antman And The Wasp is a testimony to it. Apart from kids, the young and middle-aged too are flocking to theatres to watch it."

The success of Soorma has caught trade smith Girish Wankhede off-guard, given that Singh has not particularly been in the limelight. The makers haven't spent too much on promotional work for the film either, he suggests. "Success [of films] is no longer [defined by] superstars, but by the script. [Thankfully], people are exposed to good content," he says.
