No matter how many songs he might sing for films, Shaan still loves doing live shows. The singer has sung for upcoming films like 3 Idiots, Pa, and is now busy gearing up for his solo album that will hit stores in February.
But even when he has his hands full, Shaan always makes time for his live performances. CS gets the rockstar talking about what it takes to be a great performer:
Performance drivenA singer should be able to connect with his audience. Just strutting around like a hip-hopper and saying 'wassup' is not going to work. As a performer, you need to realise that your audience has come in with a certain expectation. They want to enjoy themselves and get their money's worth. While you need to be a great singer, you also need to ensure that your presence on the stage gets noticed.
Playing down playbackThere are a lot of youngsters these days who are great singers, but they need to break out of the playback singing mould. They need to be great entertainers too. Singing is not like acting, a skill that can be developed.
To be a singer, you require genuine talent. It is a given that your sur-taal need to be perfect. But it shouldn't just end there. Reaching out to the audience is also important.
Judge grudgeWhile music reality shows have been able to tap a storehouse of talent, I feel that many TV judges are unnecessarily harsh on the contestants. More often than not, they bog down the singer, curtailing his ability to perform. But sometimes, these pressure tactics might also bring out the best in youngsters. I believe in encouraging young talent rather than pulling them down.
My playlistI might be a singer, but I don't listen to too much music. I would rather hear my kids babbling. Even though they can't really sing, I enjoy their attempt to do so. But if I were to play some sort of music in the house, it would have to be Indian classical.
