The Harmony Foundation in association with Gitanjali Group honoured Dr Sima Samar, chairperson, Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission and former deputy PM of Afghanistan and Malala Yousafzai, student and education activist from Pakistan who was shot at by the Taliban for speaking up for right to education of the girl child, with the prestigious Mother Teresa Memorial International Award for Social Justice, 2012 for their invaluable contribution towards social causes.
Several other personalities from India were also felicitated for their individual work for social justice. Mani Shankar Aiyar, former Union Minister and Prof P J Kurien, deputy chairperson, Rajya Sabha were the chief guests for the evening along with others like Kirron Kher, Mukesh Bhatt, Salim and Helen Khan, actor and MP Raj Babbar and Dr Rajan Welukar, the vice chancellor of Mumbai University.
