Guru Randhawa
Singer Guru Randhawa has made his mark in the Indian music industry with his independent singles like Ban Ja Tu Meri Rani and Suit Suit finding their way into Bollywood projects. Now, the Punjabi star has made waves in the international circuit too. His single, Lahore, which released in December, has bagged the 21st spot on Billboard's official YouTube chart of the most trending songs. Randhawa shares space on the coveted list with international biggies like Luis Fonsi, Demi Lovato and Ed Sheeran, among others.
"It was my dream to feature on Billboard with my independent music. I'm overwhelmed," says Randhawa, who stresses the number has all the ingredients to become a global chartbuster. "From an international video and upbeat sound to simple lyrics, it can be enjoyed by people across age groups."
Randhawa, 26, says the achievement indicates that indie music is seeing a revival in the country. "My singles were liked so much that some of them made their way into Bollywood. With Lahore entering the chart, it proves that an independent artiste can do without Bollywood as well." The hitmaker is the fifth Indian artiste to find pride of place on Billboard's chart. "This has encouraged me to work harder. I always wanted to represent my country on a global platform. I'm glad it's happening."
