Mallika Sherawat
After hitting headlines for being allegedly evicted from her house in Paris for not having paid rent - a report that she denied outright - Mallika Sherawat is back in news. The actor, who is the brand ambassador of School For Justice (a programme that supports girls that have been rescued from brothels), has now featured in a documentary that opens the discussion on abuse against women."
Shot across India, the European documentary, titled Free A Girl, aims to bring the murky truth about violence against women in India to light. "Like me, the women at Free A Girl are committed to raise their voices against violence and make their voices be heard. I hope this documentary helps everyone understand the magnitude of the problem and be part of the movement," says Sherawat.
In a country that is no stranger to domestic or sexual abuse, the actor says it is up to the women to lead the change. "Until and unless women are safe in India, it will be impossible to fully realise our potential as a country. Women do not have the luxury of waiting for change to happen. We must act now. I feel strongly about women who face violence at home or outside." The documentary will release next month.
