Krutika Desai has been in the television industry for two decades now but the veteran actress still finds it a new world with newer challenges to meet. Here's what she has to say:

New challenges
When I started, there were only weeklys on television. Now there are dailies and so everyone has to push the deadlines. The telly world today has become more corporate and less creative. The money has also changed; there's more money for production as well as for actors, the work too has increased multifold. But I have to say that it has become more organised and fast paced.

Young moves

Television today is also synonymous with reality shows. Although I think it is a brilliant platform to promote young talent, we need to take a step back and question ourselves if we are pushing the kids too much. I feel that too much exposure to the glam world takes the innocence out of them. I remember Saroj Khan once saying that she felt uncomfortable when she saw small kids dancing and emoting to sensuous numbers. I also agree with her.

Contradictions and change
However in the last one year, I've been noticing that television is changing once again. The content is becoming more real and people are trying out different subjects. There are very few 'me too' projects than they were when Kyunki and Balika Vadhu started.

And I see the change not only in the industry, but in the audience as well. But the viewers are a contradictory lot ----- on one hand, they are getting smarter, but on the other the tastes are deteriorating. I guess it's the addictive nature of TV that keeps them glued like a smoker who knows smoking is injurious, but cannot help himself from lighting up.

Big screen fan

Though I've been acting in television for so long, I don't really watch it. Actually, I'm a film buff. On TV, Friends is my favourite sitcom and I keep seeing the reruns; I know the dialogues by heart! I love watching classic films like Citizen Kane, The Others and The Touch.
