Toonpur Ka Superhero director Kireet Khurana is excited about his documentary on Saeed Mirza, a three-time National Award winner who's considered a pioneer of parallel cinema in Hindi films, being screened at the 7th Jagran Film Festival (JFF) on September 27 at Cinepolis (Fun Cinemas), Andheri at 6 pm.
Various facets of Mirza's life will be unraveled in the 60-minute film titled Saeed Mirza - The Leftist Sufi. It has been screened twice earlier and Khurana says he received positive feedback on both occasions. "Mirza's wife, Jennifer, who also features in the documentary, was present for one of the screenings and loved it. I hope more people get a chance to watch the film and appreciate the man for his work," adds Khurana.
That no one had thought of showcasing Mirza's life-story through a documentary before him surprises Khurana. "We stay in the same building; I approached him with the idea and got his nod."
Explaining the title of the film, he says, "He is one of the few filmmakers with a leftist ideology, which was evident in his films. We have also dohas of Saint Kabir in the film; Mirza would often go to Ladakh to find peace." The film was shot over 45 days, and on some locations explored by Mirza in his films.
