How Bollywood stars can look better

They might always be in the spotlight, but even the stars get it wrong sometimes. Meher Castelino lists some dos and dont’s that Bollywood actors need to follow if they don’t want the fashion police to come after them

Fashion forward
this one is dedicated to all the Bollywood beauties and hunks with six packs and washboard abs. Here's a quick lesson in dressing sense, if you are planning to pose and preen in front of the shutterbugs. Getting crowned as fashion icons by style critiquing websites or being named the most stylish by the media means a lot to the stars. It adds to their CV, specially if their acting talents don't add up to much.

Madhuri Dixit shows that one doesn't need to flaunt the midriff in a lehenga to look sexy

Strike a pose
Posing comes naturally to models but not all stars are models, so don't try to be one. The ‘I-am-a-little-teapot-cum-kettle' pose is not the only one to strike in front of the camera. Take note, Sonam Kapoor, Aditi Rao Hydari and Kangna Ranaut. Also, getting your legs in a twist does nothing for you. Instead, it looks as if you want to rush
somewhere!

Posing for the cameras is an art

Perfect 10
Not everybody is blessed with a perfect 10 figure but one can try and minimise those flaws and highlight the plus points. It'd be great if Kajol (with those lovely eyes) and Madhuri Dixit Nene (with that 1000 watt smile) stay true to some great ethnic wear but run away from hipster saris and low-slung lehengas if the midriff is not in an hour-glass shape. Avoid halters and bustiers too, if your arms don't resemble those of Michelle Obama.

Why wear a shapeless gown when you can pull off a sari like few can? Rani Mukerji should take this advice

Hunky fashion
Bollywood boys, try and dress like men unless you are planning on winning the best clown contest. Ranveer Singh's rise to fame has been phenomenal with a physique that is driving women (and even men) crazy, but maybe he should dress stylish so that people don't snigger or get embarrassed by his fashion foibles.

With a physique like Ranveer Singh's, one can carry off a lot of things with flair, but it is better to not go overboard

Haute or not
Picking Versace, Armani, Naeem Khan, Dior, Oscar de la Renta or Givenchy is great for the red carpet but what may look stunning on Cate Blanchett, Naomi Watts and Angelina Jolie may not work for that buxom Indian figure. Even gowns by Indian couturiers such as Rohit Bal, Tarun Tahiliani, Gauri and Nainika need figures and a stance that can carry a regal creation. Stick to those gorgeous lehenga/cholis instead of struggling in floor-kissing numbers.

If only this dress had been shorter, it would not have looked as if Chitrangada Singh is drowning in it

Scrap the sky
Reach for the sky is the mantra for most stars but it is better to do it with one's career than with heels that defy imagination. Hobbling on the red darpet will kill that Suneet Varma dream creation. Models glide in nine inch stilettos all the time and do it with great ease. Practice but don't dislocate your knees or feet because fashion is not worth all that pain.

If you don't have the legs to flaunt, don't!

Height matters
All those stars who come in tiny packages - Malaika Arora Khan, Amrita Rao, Chitrangada Singh, Tanisha Mukerjee - may have great faces but without those skyscraper heels, they almost disappear! So designers, when lending your creations to these fashion divas, please shorten the hem of their dresses; otherwise minis turn into midis and midis into maxis and maxis sweep the floor, which does not do anything for your creations or the poor beauties lost in them.

Those high heels lend themselves to a lot of ‘heal'ing later

Keep them hidden
Legs are a star's asset but show them only if they look like the sexy ‘gams' that Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone and Katrina Kaif are blessed with. Stars such as Sonakshi Sinha, Vidya Balan and Huma Qureshi should hide their parallels even if the mini is the hottest thing on the fashion charts.

That dress would have looked great on the ramp but it does nothing for a woman as beautiful as Sridevi

On or off the ramp
What looks great on the ramp on those graceful models may not have the same effect on Bollywood stars. Do rush to get Masaba's lipstick print dress/sari, Anupamaa Dayal's funky creation, Wendell Rodricks's resort wear, but get a mirror before you step out and check whether the creation looks as gorgeous on you as it does on the model. Sridevi's comeback was great, while Vidya Balan is a fabulous performer, but both their style quotient needs reworking.
