Geometry class
The German word âGestalt' refers to the essence or shape of an entity's complete form. Jewellery designer Malvika Vaswani, who has a new cross-disciplinary brand by the same name, is out with a collection of jewellery inspired by the idea of Gestalt. The collection includes necklaces, rings, bracelets, earrings, accessories, headpieces and palm cuffs.
Each piece boasts of a stark geometry; the jewellery is made of base metal brass and plated with rose gold. It also uses
the handicraft Bidri (art of laying silver/copper on gun metal) that Vaswani has been working on repurposing. The handicraft originated from Persia and now finds itself nested in India's Deccan region.

"The collection revisits the roots of modern design. Inspired by the influential Bauhaus movement (a German art school that combined crafts and fine arts in the early 20th century), this visual narrative pays homage to design pioneers," shares Vaswani. The products reflect the aesthetics and teachings of the time, and combine hand construction, geometric forms and radical industrial techniques. "No other school of thought has had a greater impact on our design culture than the Bauhaus.
Marked by minimalism, it pushes to create real objects dictated by process, material and surreal geometry," she adds.
The designer trained in process-based industrial design and studied at the Rhode Island School of Design, USA. Her design journey led to the creation of Aunterra, an award-winning experimental brand (now defunct) created to test the boundaries of design in India.
Vaswani also designs homeware and occasionally furniture. She is also trying to mix handicrafts with industrial techniques and plans to soon work on clay/black pottery from Manipur, wood and woodcarving as well as glassware.
