As a jacket, a T-shirt dress or an Indian-style bandhgala with slits, the floor-length silhouette has taken over apparel pieces. Here's how to sport it

Go desi
Wear a front-open bandhgala with jeans like actress Deepika Padukone. This makes for a great alternative to the done-to-death anarkali. "Another option is to wear a long jacket with a sari. You can either throw the pallu outside or wear the jacket over it. For more drama, try a trail jacket. Wear a basic white ganjee or top with wide-legged pants, throw on an embellished jacket and a vintage necklace," says celebrity stylist Shaleena Nathani, who has styled Padukone on various occasions.

Get dressy
For an evening out, try a structured long jacket worn over a dress in the same tone like supermodel Naomi Campbell. Add to the fierceness with a pair of heels.

Comfort chic
The long length can be adapted for various garments. For a relaxed chic look, try a cotton robe jacket over a tank top with with a pair of jeans. "Wear an oversized floor length blazer with an obi belt so it looks like a maxi dress. Add sneakers to both looks to make it casual. You can try wide-legged pants instead of jeans too," says Nathani.

One size fits all
"Loose layering means it is flattering for all body types, especially women who are on the heavier side. Since the silhouette is relaxed, it slims down the lower half," says Ratansi. "Wear wide-legged pants under a floor-length boyfriend shirt with a jacket. Underneath a long shirt, wear a lace skirt which shows through the slits," suggests Nathani. Actress Shabana Azmi goes bohemian with a long jacket with an asymmetric hem. Breathable fabrics make the outfit look less bulky.

Go easy on the fabric
"Lightweight fabrics work best when you have a petite frame like Aditi (Rao Hydari). Jackets in sheer fabric won't overwhelm your body either. Go for muted colours if you want to make a subtle statement," suggests Sanam Ratansi, who has styled actors including Hydari.

To the T
For a T-shirt dress, Ratansi suggests you knot it on one side of the slit to change the fall of the dress.
