Veteran filmmaker Suneel Darshan's romantic musical mystery, Ek Haseena Thi Ek Deewana Tha, reflects modern-day love, but is, at its soul, a true entertainer. The soundtrack is soothing, and reflects the importance of music in Indian cinema.
Darshan, who rejuvenated Akshay Kumar's career with Jaanwar (1999), after it was going through a lean patch, and gave a platform to India's proud Hollywood export, Priyanka Chopra, with Andaaz (2003), which also fetched her a top film award, is set to launch his son, Shiv, again, alongside debutante actress Natasha Fernandez. Upen Patel completes the love triangle that forms an essential part of the film.
Darshan strongly believes in stories that portray the Indian culture, and opines that soulful music helps in the creation of a film that can be a delightful watch. He has hence roped in Nadeem Saifi, from Nadeem-Shravan.
Overwhelmed with the response that the music has received, Darshan says, "In Bollywood, if the story is the body, then music is its soul. After the script, the most important ingredient of this film is its music. They had to complement the situations. Music maestro Nadeem had already been locked as composer. We have collaborated on seven movies in the 2000s. We included some tunes from Dubai, where he resides. He has captured passion and pain. His words perfectly define the emotions of the characters. It was decided that Palak Muchhal would render the female vocals, but the male singer remained undecided for long. Hence, after several voice tests, we zeroed in on Yasser Desai."
Nadeem adds, "Suneel is a talented man. His films are clean, and have great music. This time, he has mixed melody, love and modernity into the tracks. It's a perfect blend, one that will make people fall in love. He has always encouraged me, and has been a friend and brother. It has always been difficult to do the scores for his films because he only wants the best."
Shot in the picturesque locations of Cornwall, Dartmouth, Cardiff and Manchester, Ek Haseena Thi Ek Deewana Tha rides on Darshan's conviction, its melodious music and the plot. The movie releases today (Friday, June 30.)
