Denied dual membership, Charu Khurana to move SC against make-up and hairdressers' union again

It was only last month that the Supreme Court scrapped a misogynistic rule in Bollywood's corridors barring women from working as make-up artists. The hero of the story was Charu Khurana, who pursued the case for over a decade. However, her fight is far from over. After being denied a dual membership from the Cine Costume, Makeup Artists and Hairdressers' Association, she has filed a complaint with the Amboli police station and also plans to move the apex court.

Speaking from Delhi, she says, "I had applied for both hair and make-up membership but they said they would not be able to do so on the plea that others currently in the profession will suffer. But even after the court's order, they are not giving me dual membership. There is no such rule in the association's constitution."

Charu says she was called to the association office three to four times but her application has still not been accepted. "After the verdict came, they said they would get back to me after December 6 following a meeting with the committee members. I reported to the office as informed but that day, there was no office-bearer in sight. So, I decided to register a complaint with the police."

However, Sharad Shelar, president of the association, says, "We are ready to offer her a card for make-up but not dual membership. That is in compliance with the Supreme Court judgment which has asked us to admit female make-up artists. There is no mention of dual membership in the order. We have also submitted our reply to Amboli police station."
