It was rather slow business for theatre owners over the weekend with three new films, which hit screens last Friday, failing to pass muster with cinegoers. Of them, the most prominent film - Himesh Reshammiya-starrer 'Teraa Surroor' - recorded the best figures, collecting Rs 6.46 crore in its three-day run.

Trade expert Amod Mehra says, "As the makers claim to have recovered their entire cost through sale of music, satellite, overseas, internet, DVD and theatrical rights, the loss will have to be borne by those who purchased the rights."

The action thriller had received poor to middling reviews, but its makers can take heart from the fact that it has surpassed the opening weekend collections of Rajkumar Hirani's 'Saala Khadoos' starring R Madhavan and boxer Ritika Singh (Rs 5.25 crore). Besides, Himesh's film, which released on nearly 1,000 screens, now figures in the list of 2016's top 10 first weekend grossers.

Trade pundit Taran Adarsh called 'Teraa Surroor' as a "plus" film due to "controlled costs besides recovery from non-theatrical avenues".

The other two releases - 'Global Baba' and 'Murari: The Mad Gentleman' - did not get enough screens and shows, and proved to be major disasters at the ticket counters. "They were mere gap fillers. Now all hopes are pinned on this Friday's big release, 'Kapoor & Sons' to salvage the box office numbers," adds Mehra.
